The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Macedonian Parliament Antonio Milososki (VMRO-DPMNE) reiterated his position that the Zaev Government must inform the public what is it that it is negotiating about with Bulgaria. Zaev and his top diplomats Bujar Osmani and Nikola Dimitrov refused to attend two Committee hearings and the majority in the Parliament also refused a plenary debate on the growing dispute that blocked Macedonia’s EU accession prospects.
It is the height of irresponsibility that ministers refuse to attend hearings that are vital on national identity grounds, but also for our Euro-integrations. Our recommendations are that the Parliament condemns the positions of the Republic of Bulgaria, in its memorandum sent out to the EU member states, as contrary to the UN Charter and to the principle of developing good neighborly relations. Our second proposal is that our Parliament sends an appeal to all EU member states and to the European Commission and the European Parliament to allow the opening of EU accession talks without any more pre-conditions, Milososki said, after using a styrofoam cutout of Deputy Prime Minister Nikola Dimitrov, who twice refused to brief the members of Parliament on the growing dispute.
The Bulgarian memorandum stated that the Macedonian nation and language derived from the Bulgarian, and the Government in Sofia wants to have these positions imposed on Macedonia during the course of the accession talks. The document is so harshly worded that even Bulgarian historians condemned their own Government for its position.
