Organized crime prosecutor Vilma Ruskoska asked the courts to order additional 30 days in detention for disgraced former Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva, who is charged with abusing her office to extort millions from businessmen she was prosecuting.
Ruskoska cites the danger of Janeva fleeing the country, influencing witnesses and destroying evidence as justification for her request.
Her defense, on the other side, offers Janeva’s property as guarantee that she will not flee if released from detention or ordered into house arrest.
Last week it was reported that Prime Minister Zoran Zaev told opposition officials that Janeva will be released within ten days. Zaev later denied this claim, but confirmed meeting with Janeva’s lawyer Irena Frckoska. According to the opposition VMRO-DPMNE party, the decision of the court will show who was right and whether the Prime Minister is influencing the case against his close political ally.
