VMRO-DPMNE President Hristijan Mickoski announced street protests if the price of electricity goes up. The Zaev Government is expected to hike the price, as domestic energy production collapsed on its watch due to gross corruption in the REK Bitola coal plant. Macedonia is now forced to import most of its electricity and pay extremely high prices for it, and the main state owned producer – ELEM – still hasn’t made an offer to the EVN distributor for electricity supply for households for next year.

Of course we will protest. We need to protect living standards. The Government doesn’t listen to the people, so we will call on people to join us in protests, Mickoski said.

The price hike is expected in January, and could easily be over 20 percent, at a time when other prices are spiking as well.
