According to The Athletic’s report on Wednesday, RB Leipzig has secured an agreement with Napoli and North Macedonia midfielder Eljif Elmas for a January transfer.

Elmas is poised to sign a contract with Leipzig, extending until 2028. Discussions are underway regarding a transfer fee of approximately €25 million ($27 million), as noted by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano in X.

The potential arrival of Elmas could fill the gap left by Emil Forsberg, who bid farewell to Bundesliga during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen, marking his 325th competitive game for the club. The 32-year-old is set to join sister club New York Red Bulls.

Despite currently nursing a leg injury, Elmas showcased his prowess by featuring in 36 out of 38 Serie A games for Napoli last season. He made the move to southern Italy from Fenerbahce in 2019.

With 52 international appearances and 12 goals for North Macedonia, Elmas brings considerable experience to Leipzig.

RB Leipzig’s sporting director, Rouven Schröder, hinted ahead of the Bremen game that winter transfers aren’t straightforward, emphasizing recruitment only when completely convinced.

The Bundesliga side is scheduled for a training camp in La Manga, Spain, from January 2-7, gearing up for the league’s return on January 13, when RB Leipzig hosts Eintracht Frankfurt following the mid-season break.
