The Government announced today that it is tasking the Economy Ministry to re-examine the legal basis under which the Canadian Euromax Resources company was awarded a licence to operate the large Ilovica copper and gold mine near Strumica.
According to the press release, if legal defects are uncovered, the licence will be revoked. Citizens from the region were protesting in the past days, demanding that the mine is closed. The SDSM party and its affiliated NGO groups supported a series of referendums to ban Ilovica and another copper mine in the region, but once in power, SDSM is re-evaluating its position toward what will like be a large source of revenue for the region, but also for the ruling Zaev family, as the opposition alleged.
