Skopje police detrained Drin Ahmeti, nephew of the powerful DUI party leader Ali Ahmeti, best known for the openly corrupt deal in which he recently purchased a large share in the Soravia business center in downtown Skopje.

Drin Ahmeti was detained after police stopped him in his Albanian registered SUV, and found pyrotechnics in the trunk. He was nabbed by the Tiger special police unit, and is suspected with trading with pyrotechnics – the exact quantity of the materials was not made public.

The news report caused suspicions in the public that a businessman of his profile would be arrested simply for smuggling New Year firecrackers. Ahmeti was given a large share of the business center by an Albanian company which bought Soravia from its Austrian owners, even though he did not invest anything in the deal. It was widely suspected that Ali Ahmeti arranged some sort of a lucrative contract for the Albanian company, and this is a way of compensating him and his family.
