Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, who owes his position to the openly partisan actions of now disgraced Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva, wrote a brief social media comment following the latest episode in the corruption scandal involving Janeva.

The investigation must uncover all details. Everybody will be held responsible for his actions. The citizens deserve justice!, Zaev wrote, as the tapes revealing Katica Janeva’s voice assuring a businessman she was prosecuting that “everything will be well” after her intermediary collected 1.5 million EUR from him quickly became the most watched and talked about event in Macedonia.

Zaev stood by Katica Janeva for most of the allegations aimed at her, owing her that much, given how her criminal charges forced Zaev’s main political opponents in the VMRO-DPMNE party into prison or exile. But, with the allegations against her mounting, Zaev agreed to her resignation, stopping short of approving her arrest – the Prime Minister insisted that she has the right to a presumption of innocence and said he will trust her until she is sentenced. In absence of any action, as both Janeva and the main prosecutor investigating the charges against her left the country for summer vacation, Zaev was reduced to public appearances and social media comments promising that “there will be justice”.
