Prime Minister and SDSM leader Zoran Zaev and opposition VMRO-DPMNEleader Hristijan Mickoski will meet in the Parliament on Tuesday at 20h, in a bid to find common ground for the Law on the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the fate of the Special Prosecutor’s Office.
The meeting will focus on the Law on Public Prosecutor’s Office, but opposition leader Mickoski has announced that he will also bring up the topic of early parliamentary elections.
So far, the views of the government and the opposition on the topic of early parliamentary elections have not been aligned. The Government says that the main topic is the prosecution law, and whether it early elections will be discussed it remains to be seen, while VMRO-DPMNE emphasizes that in addition to the Law on Public Prosecutor’s Office, early elections, which were a condition for the meeting, will also be discussed.
Due to short deadlines, the Law on Public Prosecutor’s Office is expected to be adopted by September 15 at the latest. Its adoption requires a two-thirds majority of MPs, and it is crucial to the country’s European integration.
The last meeting of the government and opposition working groups on the law, held last week, did not yield a substantive conclusion, and now the solution is expected to be sought at the leaders’ meeting.
