Katica Janeva’s lawyer denied that she discussed her request to be released from detention with Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, but what is even more damaging, acknowledged that they coordinated on the letters Janeva issued to give up her case files.

We met on the urgency, on the importance of Janeva’s decision to give written approval to transfer the case files from the Special Prosecutor’s Office to the OJO/PPO office. This prompted a lot of discussions and turbulence in the judiciary and was in the interest of the Government and the legal system, said lawyer Irena Frckoska.

Janeva’s controversial and likely illegal move to give up her cases allows Zaev to continue his campaign of political persecution of the opposition, where Janeva was instrumental. During the failed meeting with opposition leader Hristijan Mickoski to discuss the fate of the SPO, Zaev reportedly said that Janeva will be released from detention this week. Zaev denied saying that, but acknowledged that he discussed her appeal with her lawyer Frckoska, prompting allegations of interference in the judiciary.

Frckoska, who is the of controversial law profesor and former Interior Minister and failed SDSM presidential candidate Ljubomir Frckoski, also said that her client is in poor health and requires constant treatment in prison.
