VMRO-DPMNE responded immediately after Prime Minister Zoran Zaev announced that he is prepared to scrape World War Two plaques and remove any mention of the Bulgarian occupation from them.

Zaev’s declaration clearly shows his readiness to rewrite Macedonian history and identity. Zaev publicly admitted that he is trading with our identity and that he is willing to deny the obvious fact – that the Bulgarian was fascist and an occupier during World war Two. On top of this, Zaev is prepared to abolish history as a class taught in the elementary schools, all in favor of his personal interests, VMRO-DPMNE said in a statement.

The Education Ministry is pushing a plan to roll several classes into one, and the announcement that history will be incorporated with geography and civics has caused outrage, as it comes at a time when both Bulgaria and Greece demand that Macedonia rewrites its history.
