Although recent developments have overshadowed some important statements, the admission of Saraj mayor Blerim Bexheti at a press conference that Prime Minister Zoran Zaev pressured him to influence certain members of the Judicial Council to change a court president should not be overlooked. Bexheti said that Prime Minister Zaev called him on July 17 and told him that he should help change the president of the court and that should be completed by September. After he refused to do so, pressure began on him from the anti-corruption commission, which he considers a corrupt commission.

Bexheti is a former justice minister and chairman of the DUI’s judiciary committee. Although he did not publicly disclose the name of the judge he was asked to pressure, it is clear that Supreme Court President Jovo Vangelovski is involved. Zaev asked Bexheti to influence Albanians in the Judicial Council to vote for Vangelovski’s dismissal.

The President of the Judicial Council confirmed that that day, when Zaev actually called Bexheti on its agenda there was a point for the dismissal of the president of the court.

Zaev did not deny that he had talked to Bexheti about the dismissal of Jovo Vangelovski, but his version of the telephone conversation is much milder. He says he spoke on the subject but does not admit that he was exerting pressure.

I talked about speculation that processes are being dragged out for the protection of a court president, that is Jovo Vangelovski – the president of the Supreme Court, Zaev said.

It is paradoxical for Zaev to call, even to learn information about the alleged delay in dismissal of the current president of the court. He thus proved that the current government has the most direct influence on the country’s justice system. Directly and impudently – the prime minister calls and presses for the dismissal of the president of the highest court. Vangelovski is the only one of the top judges not appointed by Zaev and his government.
