Ukraine’s officials inform that about 800 Russian soldiers have been killed in day one of their attack.

According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, exact data is difficult to compile, but over 30 Russian tanks, seven planes and six helicopters have been destroyed.

Ukraine lost the initiative in the south, where Russian forces are expanding from the Crimea, west toward Odessa north to central Ukraine and east to the Donbas region. A brazen air landing on a air base just north of Kiev brought Russian forces within reach of the capital, but Ukraine is putting its stiffest defense here. Kharkov to the east is the next major front line.
