The World Health Organization named the new coronavirus strain, which originated in South Africa, the Omicron strain, and warned that it is highly transmissible.

The United States and a number of EU countries are restricting travel from South Africa and other parts of Africa, in an attempt to slow the spread of the new mutation. Pharma companies are also considering whether to adapt the Covid vaccines to the new strain.
