Greek nationalist politician Panos Kammenos was apparently amused by the defeat his former coalition partner Alexis Tsipras suffered in the European and municipal elections held this evening.

SYRIZA committed suicide in Prespa, Kammenos tweeted.

Kammenos was a strong critic and ineffectively opposed the Tsipras – Zaev Prespa treaty, under which Macedonia is supposed to rename itself into “North Macedonia”.

The conservative New Democracy party confidently beat Tsipras’ SYRIZA this evening, prompting calls that early elections be held. Tsipras is holding a meeting of his party leadership this evening. New Democracy opposed the Prespa treaty and its leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that if he becomes Prime Minister Greece will reassert its right to block Macedonia from opening EU accession talks.
