Prosecutor Burim Rustemi was interrogated by organized crime prosecutors from the OJO service on Friday to determine his involvement in the large racketeering ring that was operating over the past several years from the Special Prosecutor’s Office, where Rustemi works.

Rustemi was appointed by Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva as head of the investigation she launched after several mid sized companies and it is widely believed that Janeva used this case to extort money from the company owners. He told the press today that Janeva did not pressure him over his upcoming testimony.

I testified as a witness in the racketeering case, regarding our investigation into the Postal Bank allegations raised by the Special Prosecutor’s Office. I told the truth and gave all information that was required of me. I believe that my statement will contribute to the development of the investigation, Rustemi said, adding that he was not pressured by Janeva over what he was going to say.

The Special Prosecutor’s Office is in shambles after Janeva reportedly demanded that the rest of the team covers for her and threatened that she will bring up allegations against them if they harm her in their interrogation before the OJO prosecutors. Most of the team turned against Janeva from day one, and in response she ordered that SPO prosecutors are searched as they enter and leave their offices and had a very tense staff meeting on Monday during which both sides traded serious allegations.

Two other SPO prosecutors were questioned by OJO so far, and Janeva herself is expected to be interrogated on Tuesday.
