Defense Minister Radmila Sekerinska said that the military is also prepared to help, if there is a serious attempt by migrant groups to breach the border from Greece into Macedonia. Greece is experiencing several days of riots in the Diavata migrant camp near Solun/Thessaloniki, sparked by rumors that the border is about to be re-opened, three years after the major migrant crisis was stopped.

We discussed the matter with the Interior Ministry yesterday and we are prepared to support them and to face an increased pressure on the border. It is important to be alert and prepared, Sekerinska said, during a NATO event in Skopje.

The previous, VMRO-DPMNE led Government, and President Gjorge Ivanov, closed the border in 2016 and helped put an end to the migrant crisis. For this purpose, a state of emergency was declared on the border, allowing the deployment of the army to bolster the police force.

The leftists, SDSM led Government in place now includes officials who are supporters of an open borders policy. The border has been remained closed, but there is an increased number of reports of traffic accidents involving migrants, indicating that the trickle across has intensified.
