The Makstil steel mill denies that it has caused the mass die-off of fish in the Vardar river that was reported yesterday.

According to initial reports from the city of Skopje, the cause of the incident could be the leaking of chemicals from Makstil. The company, on the other hand, insists that it conducted its own test and determined that its waste water is clear and without noticeable pollutants.

The dead fish were noticed along the Aerodrom district of Skopje, and further down stream the river was painted yellow.
