Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva hinted that the country is not alone in its blockade of Macedonia’s EU accession talks.
Bulgaria wants to see Macedonia a member state of the EU more than other EU member states and trans-oceanic countries, but our support is not unconditional. Not all in the EU insist to see Macedonia as a member, she said in a BTV interview.
Macedonia was vetoed in its EU accession for decades by Greece, then briefly by France, and currently by Bulgaria. Bulgaria has stated a long list of historic demands and demands on national identity issues before Macedonia. Other demands include the alleged closed Macedonian posture toward Bulgarian businesses and educational and cultural institutions. Zaharieva claimed that two Bulgarian universities have waited for years for approval to open branches, and that media outlets are still waiting for broadcasting rights.
