The German Bundestag rejected a proposal from the Green Party to admit 5.000 asylum seekers from the overcrowded Greek islands close to Turkey.

Many of the several tens of thousands of migrants on islands such as Lesvos and Chios have been there since the 2015/16 migrant crisis, when the Balkan route was closed. The proposal to accept a portion of them and ease the overcrowding was supported by 117 members of the German Parliament, while a large majority of 495 were opposed.
