President Stevo Pendarovski is on a two day visit Germany, where he is expected to lobby for German support to allow Macedonia to open EU accession talks in October.
Pendarovski will meet with German President Frank Walter Steinmeier and Foreign Minister Heiko Mass. Both come from the social-democratic SPD party which stands by its sister SDSM party in Macedonia and supports opening of accession talks, but objections have begun to appear among the German conservatives. Zaev and Pendarovski were hoping that Germany will be a solid support of opening accession talks, and will furthermore push France to put aside its objections, but instead it was delays in the Bundestag which buried the request to open accession talks in June.
