Opposition presidential candidate Gordana Siljanovska – Davkova said its sadly predictable that, even after Macedonia was forced to change its name, it may still be rejected as it applies to begin EU accession talks. The announcement came from EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn, who said that, instead of starting accession talks this summer, Macedonia may get something called “preparatory stage of negotiations”.

There are serious warnings given to Montenegro, which is on the verge of joining the EU, and to Serbia which has completed half its chapters. As for us, we will get some specific form of a carrot, some special carrot. We changed our name, but the Greek opposition leader tells us he will still block us on the road to the EU. On the other hand, Commissioner Hahn, with his diplomatic vocabulary, si telling us that we will only be allowed to enter a preparatory stage of talks. How long do they intend to prepare us for talks? Weren’t we told last June that we begin preparations lasting one year, which consisted mostly of preparing the Prespa treaty and changing our name. How long must we wait? After nine positive recommendations, we still won’t get the date for accession talks. And the Government, they even threw a party, Siljanovska said during her rally in Bitola.

She added that the outcome is predictable, given how, under Zaev, Macedonia is failing to uphold rule of law criteria.

According to Siljanovska, the Zaev Government seriously abused EU and NATO, when it created the three part referendum question in September 2018, in an attempt to get the public to agree to the name change. The attempt failed, as only 36 percent of the voters turned out, and instead of EU and NATO lifting support for the name change, the name change dragged EU and NATO down with it.

This Government is not a liberal democracy, it’s a hybrid regime, and there is so much work before we are ready. We see enormous expansion of nepotism under the Government. We see corruption and crime, which are the main threats to Macedonia’s sovereignty. We have a divided society and the best of us are leaving around the world where they are more respected, said Siljanovska.
