With Prime Minister Tsipras we many telephone conversations using WhatsApp during the entire period, over supporting our ministers, creating ideas and finding solutions, because we were part of the negotiation process, but all this is in the area of creating and encouraging ideas. All the meetings held regarding the Prespa Treaty have their own minutes, are archived in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and we followed all protocols.

This is how Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev justifies his actions, holding diplomatic talks using the phone app WhatsApp. Asked if he had considered video conferencing to see who he really is talking with, Zaev said:

Today, when we see what happened, yes. Of course, that’s how I can check it, in the future. But at that moment you absolutely do not think it is possible for someone to do something like this. You see that we have a conference connection. It shows the inventiveness of the creators of these pranks that they absolutely did everywhere in the world. Unfortunately, in our country too.
