AS Roma has appointed former captain Daniele De Rossi as their new head coach, replacing Jose Mourinho, who was dismissed earlier on the same day. De Rossi, who spent 18 years as a player with Roma, has agreed to a short-term deal until June 2024. Roma’s owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, expressed confidence in De Rossi’s strong connection with the club and his ability to guide the players, emphasizing his alignment with the club’s values. Mourinho’s departure followed a recent downturn in form, with only one win in the last five Serie A matches, leaving Roma in the ninth position. De Rossi, a former Italy midfielder and 2006 World Cup winner, previously served on Italy’s coaching staff and had a brief managerial stint at SPAL before joining Roma. The Friedkins thanked Mourinho for his passion and efforts during his tenure but believed an immediate change was in the club’s best interests. Mourinho, known for his successful managerial career, led Roma to the Europa League final last season and secured the Europa Conference League title in the previous campaign.
