VMRO-DPMNE Vice President Aleksandar Nikoloski campaigned in Bitola today together with the party’s mayoral candidate Toni Konjanovski, ahead of one of the key races in the second round of the elections. With reserves of coal at the strategically important REK Bitola power plant apparently all used up, Nikoloski warned that both the city and the entire country are in a very dangerous situation.

We face energy collapse just as a difficult winter is being predicted. This will cause problems with heating, and it is entirely due to Zaev’s incompetent policies. Macedonia will be left without electricity and will face blackouts, not because of the energy crisis in Europe but because of the irresponsible actions of the Government. Macedonia has sufficient resources to produce all the energy it uses. When REK Bitola, REK Oslomej and our hydro plants are in proper working order, Macedonia can produce all of its electricity, for the households and the industry. But that is now not the case because of the irresponsible policies, Nikoloski said.

Zaev openly campaigned on closing down REK Bitola – the facility that produces between 70 and 80 percent of Macedonia’s electricity, and replacing it with a mix of solar and wind generators. The MEPSO energy company said that it had to tap into the European energy supplies without even having a purchase contract, that will carry serious fines.
