Skopje authorities ordered the chopping down of the dozen oriental cherry trees lining the Maxim Gorki street in downtown Skopje.
The highly ornamental trees were beloved by the citizens, who would race to snap pictures near them during their short blossom season. The authorities say the trees were diseased, and had to be removed. The city promises to plant new ones, donated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development branch.
