First Deputy Prime Minister Artan Grubi said that, according to his information, the Constitutional Court approved the special law adopted to give the American – Turkish Bechtel – Enka consortium exclusive right to build several key highways in Macedonia. The contract was strongly supported by the US, and will lead to direct negotiations between the Government and the company for the price of the highways – which raised serious concerns that the lack of bidding will greatly inflate the price.

Grubi said that this was a “great decision, that overcomes the last legal obstacle for the greatest infrastructure project in the history of our country”, before expressing his gratitude to the Constitutional Court judges.

The company will be contracted to build a highway between Gostivar and Kicevo, a link from Struga to the border with Albania, as well as highway betewen Prilep and Bitola. Highway construction stopped under the Zaev regime, as he immediately suspended work with the Chinese Sinohydro company that is building a highway between Kicevo and Ohrid.
